Concept Sketch: Post Apocalyptic Outfit

I went to Wasteland Weekend last year and had a blast. But wasn’t prepared for the heat. All my outfits were bulky coats and armor pieces that I thought I would be able to wear when the sun came down. Usually it would get cold during the night, but 2015’s heat wave hit a record high for that time of the year and the nights were still in the 100s (Fahrenheit).

I plan on rigging together a water pouch/container into the hat, connect a small hose that will have holes in it so that the water will drip onto the cloth (might have an on and off valve on it too), helping me stay cool during the hot Southern California days in late September.

The  hat itself is inspired by Asian rice hats. The plan for this one is to use bike wheel parts, cloth and other found bits and pieces. The bottom of the cloth will probably be weighed down by beads or seashells.

My goal this year is to get one of those creepy baby doll heads that blink and incorporate it into my costume this year. I searched many thrift stores last year and couldn’t find one. I might have to actually get a new one this year so I can incorporate it into my outfit design somehow.

LAST YEAR AT WW IMAGES THAT HELPED INSPIRE THIS PIECE:

The second day at Wasteland Weekend, I started drenching some scarves in water and found a way to wrap them around my hat to help cool off my face/neck.

Later I found a way to have a wet scarf losely fitting over the brim of my hat so it wasn’t pressed against my skin and to let a breeze go through it better (creating a swamp cooler around my face).

Hoping that 2016 will have cooler nights so I can wear the coats I made for last year. But this year I hope to be better prepared by making outfits that will work well during the heat of the day.
