Getting A Head

This is another oil painting I have completed. The inspiration for this one was loosely based on Princess Mombi from the Oz books and the Return to Oz movie.

Sketch

I started with a loose idea of what I wanted to create. I wanted to give myself a little play room. First I thought I wanted her hair to be a little messy, but later decided that I liked the idea that this woman’s vanity would cause her to want to make sure that everything was perfect and clean. Because of this, I also removed the idea of her having laced up sleeves that had dangling strings hanging from the wrist.

Canvas painting before varnish:
A good gloss vanish helps the contrast of the painting and makes the colors pop. You get a little bit of an idea of who the final image will look after varnishing when the oil paint is still wet.

In the image below, I had just worked on the crown and hair near the hands. In comparison the rest of the hair and black areas looks dull.

Adding Varnish

You can see the difference in this instagram reel I made of me applying the varnish.
