The Handmaiden’s Quilt
My inspiration for this drawing was…well…the Handmaid’s Tale and a quilt that my grandmother made me and my brother when I was very young. I have memories of helping her sort triangles, squares and circles into neat piles.
Besides inspiring me to take up sewing, she also inspired me to stand up for myself.
When I was a very young kid, my grandmother stood up to my abusive father. I watched her as she looked him in the eyes, stood between me and him and said “You will not touch her!”. From then on, I felt that if a woman like her could stand up to a scary army veteran like my father, than I could do the same.
I guess in a way, this art is sort of saying “remember what you fight for”.
