I have been doing martial arts since I was a kid. But for this comic, Clint (the writer) wanted me to draw her fighting a little more like a wrestler. She’s strong, but doesn’t have the same amount of control as a martial artist does -somewhere between a wrestler and a boxer. This was a huge challenge for me. And I feel I somehow slipped at panel 2 a little – now that I look at it.

But besides that challenge, the next one was motion of certain elements on the characters. Like Suzie’s coat, hair and Darlene’s hair. Trying to figure out the momentum of these objects based on the character’s movements was a fun challenge for me.

Though there is some artistic license also added in. Such as the fact that Suzie doesn’t end up with a mouth full of hair from all her fighting. This is the big reason why I always braid my hair when I do Karate or any form of martial arts. Your form and body control can be perfect and produce an awesome kick, but all of it is ruined because a single strand of hair went up your nose at the wrong time.
