Zombie Ranch page 426: Artist Talk

When Clint told me the idea he had for this page for Zombie Ranch and told me that Oscar would talk about his lemon tree I said “all that matters is that he remembers to hit the tree with a rolled up newspaper”. Clint was in confused silence before a minute or so before saying “What?!”.

When I was a kid, I lived on a small farm. My also dad grew up on a farm and so people would ask him for farming advice. One day I remember a family friend complaining to him that their lemon tree wasn’t growing any lemons. Without skipping a beat he said, “You need to hit your tree with a rolled up newspaper. Then it will give you lemons the next year.”

Ever since that day, I tell people to hit their trees with a rolled up newspaper when ever they tell me that they’re growing a fruit tree. I don’t know how true this is, but I mostly like telling people this tip to see their expression.
